A Letter To All Cape Ann And North Shore Films Fans
Dear Fellow Film Nuts,
At last, we can spill it – we now have a home in Gloucester! Starting October 1st, The MassBay Film Project’s newly-formed Cape Ann Community Cinema will call The Gorton Theatre at The Gloucester Stage Company at 267 East Main Street its home. Every Thursday through Sunday (plus Monday holidays!) from October ’08 to May ’09, we will deliver 2-4 independent and foreign films every week, with an opening month celebration during which we will host the first of what we hope will be many incarnations of The Boston North Shore Film Festival. Yes, I’m completely serious. And stop calling me Shirley.
I’d like to offer a laurel and hearty handshake to all who stepped up and let our friends at The Gloucester Stage Company know that we should have a chance to be a part of the theatre’s rich heritage. We promise to work diligently to put the “you” in “community,” taking not only programming suggestions from our supporters, but also by working with other local business to better promote all that Cape Ann and the North Shore have to offer. Please drop us a note if you have a business you’d like to promote while helping promote our “perpetual film festival.”
“But what are you up to in the mean time?” you ask? Good question. Apart from all the community partnering, acquisition of new equipment and programming for Q4 there is to do, we will have some films to share with you over the summer. Starting Saturday, June 14th for five dates through August, we are co-presenting a series of “green” films at the West Gloucester Trinitarian Congregational Church. The frist film, Kilowatt Ours, is a great and engaging way to learn how to leave a smaller carbon footprint while saving money on electricity, to boot. We’ve also created “TalkAbout” Guides to help you better understand the issues in these movies, and will be on hand at each of the five screenings help facilitate a discussion after the movie. Click through to the next page for more information on this and the other great offerings in store.
To make up for the fact that our hugely popular first-Thursday-of-the-month series will be on hiatus this summer, we are most pleased to announce that we will bring it back in October – with a free film every Thursday night throughout this 5-Thursday month! Woo-hoo! Free film! Free film! Yay that!
Also, we’re working on finding a suitable space in Gloucester to land our 20′ inflatable BlimpScreen (click on “Mobile Movies” on the next page) for all manner of movies, from family-friendly fare like The Wizard Of Oz and Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory to a “Noir Beneath The Stars” kind of thing with The Maltese Falcon and Casablanca.
If you know someone who might enjoy reading about what we have to offer, sign up for our weekly e-mail on the next page and click on the “Forward E-Mail” button at the end of your email message from us. We’d love for more people to know who we are and what we do. If you are interested in helping out, either as a volunteer or a sponsor, please e-mail us from our “Contact Us” page.
